Aston Villa have landed Ryan Bertrand from Chelsea on loan for the remainder of the season to tighten the defence at Villa Park.
The English left back had been struggling for first team football at Stamford Bridge, with other options being selected ahead of him on the left side of the Blues' defence.
Jose Mourinho told The Express, "We decided that Ryan Bertrand the best thing for him was to go on loan for the rest of the season because he's a good player, because he's our player.
"He needs to play, because at the moment my options for the left-back are Ashley Cole and Azpilicueta."
The Chelsea manager was adamant that the left-back will return to the club and continue to improve as a player under his guidance in the future.
Bertrand will be desperate to impress for the Villains to show Mourinho that he is capable of performing to a high standard regularly in the Premier League.
Particularly in a World Cup year, Bertrand will want to grab the attention of England manager Roy Hodgson in an effort to make the squad that flies to Brazil in the summer.
This signing for Paul Lambert will be his second loan acquisition of the transfer window, having secured the services of Grant Holt until the summer too.
Aston Villa are currently eleventh in the table and will travel to Anfield this weekend in search of a victory against Liverpool.
