Floyd Mayweather should fight Amir Khan in the U.K., claims Hagler

Former undisputed middleweight king 'Marvellous' Marvin Hagler has declared that Floyd Mayweather should prove he deserves to be considered pound-for-pound king by meeting Amir Khan in the U.K. next May.

Mayweather is expected to confirm Khan as his next opponent for a May 3rd showdown in Las Vegas next month, after months of speculation linking the former world light-welterweight champion with a shot at immortality in boxing biggest pay-day against the 45-0 megastar.

Khan's potential scrap has caused it's fair share of controversy before it even gets the official go-ahead, with fight fans and analysts alike questioning the logic of allowing a fighter who has lost of two his four bouts to step up and face the widely-recognised pound-for-pound king.

Hagler defended his middleweight crown as far afield as London and Italy during a record-breaking run as champion in the 1980's and believes that Mayweather should do the same before being considered an all-time great, challenging 'Money' to step away from the bright light of Vegas in search of a new challenge.

During an interview on The Clare Balding Show on BT Sport the 'Marvellous' one stated: "When I was undisputed champion I always had to fight the number one contender. It made me that much better, made me work that much harder, made me get in better condition. The fighters back in that era, they trained harder and were more dedicated to the fight game.

"Its going to be an exciting fight [Khan vs. Mayweather]. But what the British people would love to see is Mayweather taking the big step and coming here and fighting Khan on his turf and showing the world really if he is a true champion instead of fighting in his own back yard in Vegas.

"You need to expose yourself, everyone knows you’re a champion. Well then, you have nothing to hide if your talent and your skill is good."

Manny Pacquiao, Marcos Maidana and Danny Garcia have also been mentioned in passing with Mayweather's preferred date of May 3rd for a mega-money Vegas bout, but Khan remains favourite to land a bout which his sure to have British fight fans flocking to Nevada later this year.

Marvin Hagler was speaking on The Clare Balding Show, to see the full interview tune in to BT Sport 1 at 9pm on Saturday 18th January.
