Rays re-sign Matt Joyce as they look to keep stars

The Tampa Bay Rays have today delighted their fans with the re-signing Matt Joyce, which comes just a day after they agreed a $14 million deal for David Price as they avoided arbitration.

Joyce, 29, has signed on a much more modest one-year deal of $3.7 million for the 2014 season. The move shows the Rays are committed to spending money to retain their squad.

The move was essential for the ball club as they look to win the Eastern Division of the MLB's American League this year for the first time since 2010.

There was a fear that the Rays would continue their costing cutting exercise, after they cut their payroll by $6 million last year, but that fear seems to have been dampened slightly with the events of the last two days.

Joyce had been mentioned in multiple trade rumors. He was an All-Star in 2011, and the left-hander's batting average was .235, with 18 home runs and 47 RBI in 481 plate appearances for the Rays in 2013.

He is likely to share time in the outfield with David De Jesus, Desmond Jennings and Wil Myers.
