Fabio Coentrao is desperate to seal a January move to Manchester United, according to Spanish newspaper AS.
The Portuguese left-back came close to signing for Manchester United in the summer, but failed to agree a deal before the transfer window closed.
However, David Moyes' interest in the player is reportedly still high and a potential January move has looked more than likely at times.
And it seems that the only thing stopped Coentrao moving to Old Trafford is Real Madrid's reluctance to leave themselves exposed in the position.
Currently Marcelo is Carlo Ancelotti's first choice at left-back but they know that if Coentrao leaves, they have no proven replacement.
Coentrao is desperate to seal a move in January as he knows he needs plenty of first team football between now and the summer to ensure he makes Portugal's World Cup squad.
But although Real are ready to sell Coentrao, they won't do it until they have a replacement.
Los Blancos have been linked with a move for Spanish starlet Alberto Moreno but the club know Sevilla are unlikely to deal with them until the summer.
It could leave Coentrao facing a blocked exit door at the Bernabeu until at least the summer.
But David Moyes' need for a left-back might not be urgent until the summer as the Portuguese international won't be a guaranteed starter if he does seal a move to the Premier League champions.
Currently Patrice Evra holds the position but is expected to depart when his contract runs out at the end of the season.
