Arsenal are planning to open talks with Atletico Madrid over the transfer of Javier Manquillo in the coming weeks, reports Spanish newspaper El Mundo Deportivo.

Arsene Wenger has been trying to tie veteran right-back Bacary Sagna down to a new deal at the Emirates, but has so far failed to convince him to commit his future to the Gunners.

The Arsenal boss stated last week that he was confident of agreeing a deal with the player but with Sagna free to negotiate with other clubs, Wenger has been forced to scan the globe for alternatives.

Atletico Madrid's young right-back Manquillo has been shortlisted by the Gunners as a replacement and reports in Spain are now suggesting that Wenger is preparing to contact officials at the Vicente Calderon in the coming weeks regarding a potential move.

It's another indication that Sagna could be on his way out of north London following a successful seven year spell at the club.

Reports have linked the 30-year-old with a move to PSG and Monaco, who are both ready to offer him a substantial pay rise to move back to France.

19-year-old Manquillo is considered a terrific prospect in Spain having been capped seven times at under-20 level as well as featuring for Atletico in the Champions League.
