England all-rounder Ravi Bopara has stated that he wants Alastair Cook to stay as captain - despite the humiliation that he has had to face in Australia.
He feels that the left hander is their best player and in his view, the best player should be the captain.
Bopara, speaking at a press conference, said on Cook: “I would love for him to carry on and do both formats.
“I do believe that your best player should be your captain and I still believe that he is our best player.”
Bopara then reflected on how good Cook’s record has been prior to the tour Down Under:
“Previous to this Ashes tour, he had a very good record [as captain],” Bopara said.
“Although the captain always gets the blame, I don't think that's right.”
Bopara, who was England’s ODI Player Of The Year 2013 has himself lacked in form as he has scored just 62 runs from three ODIs which isn’t a very good record given that he is a class player and has had high standards for the past two years or so.
“It is a team game. The team needs to perform for you to win.
“The other players see it the same way. He is one of our most experienced players.
“He knows what he is doing. It is just a tough time and he is the sort of guy who will turn it around.
“I think that this is good for him and he will come out of it a much better person.”
What I personally feel is that Cook is the perfect man for to take England to new heights after they have reached “Rock Bottom”.
The reason of course being that he is our team’s best player and is a quick learner. He probably would have learnt a lot on this tour and would come back strongly I reckon in England’s next test series against Sri Lanka which will also mark the beginning of the long home season.
