Walcott's replacement

Football News

The loss of the injured Theo Walcott is a huge blow for England. In the past, Walcott has been derided as a speed merchant whose game has little finesse and was severely lacking delivery.

Over the last couple of seasons, though, there have been signs that Walcott was developing as a player. His runs were become more intelligent and he was starting to become a reliable goalscorer. Plus, he alone of England's options has significant experience of Champions League and international football.

It is a shame then that his injury leaves Hodgson back to selecting players who have many of the same issues Walcott was putting behind him. All three of the likely possibilities are risky propositions.

Aaron Lennon lacks the final ball that top wingers need. Raheem Sterling won't have Luis Suarez's delivery to make his pace really useful and all too often Andros Townsend cuts back inside to take a wayward shot.

If Hodgson wants to keep playing with an attacking right winger he is going to have to
get an extra 5% to 10 % out of one of those guys.
