The Detroit Lions look set to hire Joe Lombardi as their new offensive coordinator, reports ESPN

The Saints quarterbacks coach, who is the grandson of Hall of Fame coach Vince Lombardi, is in contract negotiations with the Lions.

And it has been reported that the Lions and Lombardi are coming close to an agreement regarding a contract.

The quarterbacks coach has spent the last seven seasons with the Saints, but now looks likely to undertake a new challenge with the Lions.

The biggest task facing Lombardi will be mentoring Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, who endured a difficult 2013. Stafford will be looking to get back to his best as the Lions target success in 2014.

It remains to be seen as to whether the Lions will appoint Lombardi in the next few days or if negotiations continue throughout the week.
