Manchester United are confident of sealing a deal for Juan Mata before the week is out, reports ESPN.
And according to ESPN's sources, David Moyes is confident he can seal a deal for the Spanish playmaker by the weekend.
United officials have been in London this week and are believed to be working on two deals. One is for Mata and the other for a European-based midfielder.
Although the latter is someway off, sources have revealed that discussion for Mata are progressing rapidly.
The fee is believed to be in the region of £40m, which would be a club record for Manchester United.
It marks a change of perspective for Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, who pulled the plug on a deal to sell Demba Ba to Arsenal because he considered them title rivals.
Mourinho's willingness to sell Mata to United either reveals that Mourinho doesn't deem United title rivals or that he needs the money following the purchase of Nemanja Matic.
It also represents a change in policy for the Red Devils, who, in the past, have refused to pay over the odds for any player in the manner of their city rivals or indeed Chelsea.
However, because of the nature of United's situation, the alarm bells are ringing around Old Trafford and drastic action is being taken as a result.
