Manchester United target Ilkay Gundogan has been urged by teammate Roman Weidenfeller to continue his development at Borussia Dortmund and resist the temptation to leave the Bundesliga club for pastures new.

The 23-year-old is out of contract at the end of next season and, given that Gundogan has yet to provide clear indication that he will renew his deal, there is intense speculation he may seek a departure.

Manchester United have been credited with interest in the Germany international as David Moyes strives to bring a creative midfielder to Old Trafford, although injury could prevent a transfer this month.

But Dortmund goalkeeper Weidenfeller is hopeful Gundogan will remain committed to the club rather than pursuing a move elsewhere were an opportunity to present itself.

"I would advise Gundogan to stay," he told Kicker. "His development is not yet over.

"There are a lot of challenges he can help us with at Dortmund."

Gundogan is reported to be valued at £24 million by his current employers and, along with Manchester United, has also been linked with a potential transfer to Real Madrid.
