The New York Rangers will take to the ice with the New York Islanders for the first of three games against their inter-city rivals.

The Rangers will be missing goalie Henrik Lundqvist through illness and will instead rely on Cam Talbot, making his 15th appearance of the season. They also plan to bring in a back-up in time for the game.

These rivals will play again at Madison Square Garden on the 31st of January in addition to the Stadium Series game at Yankee Stadium on the 29th January.

The Rangers have won six of their last eight games and four of their last five at home. Meanwhile, the Islanders have won five of their previous seven games including a three game stretch on a recent road trip.

The Islanders' despite their impressive string of recent results are still struggling near the bottom of the conference whilst the Rangers will hope to improve on their position of fifth in the conference.

In terms of injuries the Islanders will be without goaltender Evgeni Nabokov (lower body) and defensemen Lubomir Visnovsky (concussion) and Travis Hamonic (upper body). Rangers forward Derek Dorsett is out with a broken tibia.
