Liverpool are in talks to sign Red Bull Salzburg midfielder Valon Berisha, according to the Daily Star.
The Norway international has been identified by the Merseyside club as a value-for-money replacement for the injured Lucas Leiva, and are hoping to complete a £2.5million deal before the transfer window closes next week.
Reds boss Brendan Rodgers was already keen to strengthen his Anfield squad this month, and is now even more determined, following the news that the Brazilian midfielder is facing a two-month lay-off.
Berisha was watched by Liverpool scouts during Salzburg's 3-0 friendly win over Bayern Munich at the weekend, and after playing well has increased his chances of a mid-season switch to the Premier League.
Liverpool will also be hoping to utilise their connections with former manager Gerard Houllier, who is now employed as the Austrian club's global sports director, in their bid to lure the 20-year-old from the Red Bull Arena.
