Liverpool's hopes of signing Barcelona defender Martin Montoya have been dealt a significant blow, after talks between the player and club reached an impasse, reports the Daily Star.
The 22-year-old had been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League this month, after Barca's failure to secure Montoya to a new contract.
However, Tata Martino has now been offered renewed hope of extending Montoya's stay at Camp Nou, following Liverpool's inability to wrap up a deal that would bring the Spaniard to Anfield.
Montoya was expected to leave Barcelona in search of more regular first-team football, having made just 12 appearances for them this season.
And, with Brendan Rodgers on the lookout for reinforcements in January, it was expected that Liverpool would present him with that opportunity.
But, in light of this latest twist in the ongoing transfer saga, an announcement that Montoya has in fact penned a new deal to stay in La Liga, could be announced by Barcelona by the end of the week.
