Chelsea playmaker Juan Mata has told friends and family that he will be joining Premier League champions Manchester United, reports Matt Law of the Telegraph.

It had previously been reported that the Red Devils were willing to spend £37 million on the Spanish international and now it appears that a move is edging closer.

Mata has struggled under Jose Mourinho this season and has rarely featured under the Portuguese tactician.

Meanwhile, Manchester United have had a troubled season and seem in desperate need of a fresh face. The Red Devils are currently sitting in seventh place in the Premier League and are 14 points behind league leaders Arsenal.

However now - with just over a week of the January transfer window remaining - Moyes seems to be closing in on his first signing of this window, with the Spaniard having told those closest to him that he's moving to Manchester.

With Mata potentially on his way, Manchester United boss David Moyes will now be looking ahead to the Red Devils' Capital One Cup semi-final second leg clash with Sunderland tonight. United will be hoping to overturn the 2-1 deficit at the Theatre of Dreams this evening.
