Dutch striker Luuk de Jong is close to joining Newcastle United, according to reports.
For a fee of around £8.5million, the 23-year-old would put a substantial dent in the Magpies funds and is yet to put the ball in the net for his current team Borussia Monchengladbach so far this term.
However, De Jong has not started a game for his club this season, and has recently been told he is fifth choice for the striker role at the club.
A move to Newcastle, which is looking increasingly likely, will give him a fresh start in a different country. That's not to say De Jong will be a guaranteed starter for the north West outfit, as Loic Remy and Yoan Gouffran's partnership has proved to work for Newcastle.
This move for De Jong seems to quash the possibility of Newcastle signing the goal hungry Remy on a permanent deal, as the Dutchman will be given time to adjust to the Premier League and be ready for next season in good form, when they are likely to be without Remy.
The Magpies had been rivalled by the likes of PSV and Ajax, but the valuation of De Jong is thought to have put them off.
