Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will make push to land top transfer target Julian Draxler before the January transfer window closes, with the Gunners desperate to avoid a summer auction for a player they can sign this month for a fee believed to be in the region of £35m.
Draxler has been persistently linked with a switch to the Emirates in recent weeks, with Gunners boss Arsene Wenger a long-term admirer of the starlet, with a move for the playmaker last summer foiled before the Gunners turned their attention to Mesut Ozil.
Wenger is well aware that Draxler is one of Europe's most sought-after youngsters and wants to make every effort to avoid a prolonged negotiation process with Schalke 04 during the close season, a longer time frame which will allow rival suitors to make their interest concrete.
Schalke are extremely unlikely to let the 20-year-old leave this month but Gunners chiefs have not given up hope on a last-gasp deal and will travel to Gelsenkirchen this week in an effort to force through a deal worth at least £35m, according to The Mirror.
The Bundesliga giants are expected to knock back any approach but will hold talks with Arsenal, with the German international's long-term future still very much up for debate.
