Manchester United and Manchester City will both have to turn to alternative defensive targets as Porto centre-back Eliaquim Mangala has no desire to leave this month, according to Portuguese newspaper A Bola.

The source, which cites French publication Le 10 Sport, is claiming that the highly-rated starlet is unwilling to depart his current club until at least the summer as he is wants to ensure that he is playing regular football in the build up to the World Cup.

Both City and United have registered a strong interest in the 22-year-old as he is seen as the ideal candidate to address the fragilities in both of their back-lines. However it is unlikely he will change his mind and opt for a move, particularly when it could take him a while to acclimatise to the faster pace of the Premier League.

City have already been rebuffed in their attempts to bring in Mangala, having reportedly failed with an attempted effort of €45million.

Both Manuel Pellegrini and David Moyes have been linked with other defensive targets, including Bayern Munich’s Dante, but it remains to be seen whether either can complete their business before February 1.
