Top Five: Worst penalties of all time

Tottenham Hotspur recently put Crystal Palace to the sword with a 2-0 win in a fairly Premier League predictable outcome. Those who saw the game however, would recognise Palace's competitiveness in the first half of the game, and they were presented with a golden opportunity to take the lead at White Hart Lane with a penalty.

However..

From 12 yards out, Jason Puncheon managed to produce what some people are calling 'the worst penalty in living memory'. It certainly wasn't terrific. Puncheon aimed for the top left corner, yet managed to hit the ball sky high and it's reported that the Chinese space rover is in danger as the ball continues to leave the atmosphere.

With that in mind, here is a list of the five worst penalties I have seen. Quite simply, they're great for some amusement and never fail to make you think "How?!" each and every time.

5.) Harry Kewell vs Melbourne Heart

Blimey mate.

Mark Viduka, Tim Cahill, Harry Kewell. We've seen some fine Aussie exports in the Premier League during the last 20 years. Kewell even managed to reach a Champions League semi-final with Leeds United back in 2002. It appears however, that poor old Harry's career is rapidly winding down. In a fiercely contested A-League game, Kewell had a glorious chance to drag Melbourne back into the match. Wait for the replay, it's a golden angle.

4.) Neymar vs Colombia

Samba skills at their not so finest

Neymar is now known as one of the world's finest footballers. After lighting up the Confederations Cup in the summer of 2013 with some superb technical skill and stunning goals, slotting one home from 12 yards should be a piece of cake, correct? Turns out it's not that simple. To make it more interesting, this is only one of a few horror shows Neymar has had from the spot. Keep your head up son!

3.) Chris Waddle vs West Germany

What could've been

In England's finest World Cup campaign since 1966, a tense and superb semi-final against West Germany in the majestic Stadio Delle Alpi would ultimately come down to penalties. Gazza's tears, Linker's gesture, it would all go down in English footballing folklore. Fortunately, up stepped Chris Waddle to manage the footballing expectations of a nation and bring us all back down to earth. Cheers Chris.

2.) Henry & Pires vs Manchester City

What a pair of muppets

Two of the finest foreign imports to have played in the Premier League. What could possibly go wrong? Well as it turns out, quite a lot. In an admirable attempt to put a clever penalty past City's David James, Pires attempts to lay the ball forward for Henry to slot home past a despairing James. At least, that was the plan...

1.) Pilo vs Votuporanguense

Was this for a bet?

There are just no words. Failing to reach the goal? Maybe it's time to hang up those boots.
