The former-Crystal Palace star has barely featured under David Moyes this season and has been heavily linked with a loan move to Cardiff City.
The Manchester United connection - Cardiff are managed by former-United forward Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - seems to have given them the edge in the battle to snap up Zaha on a temporary basis.
One of the most sought after English talents this time last year, Zaha opted to join United ahead of a number of other clubs.
He stayed at Crystal Palace after agreeing a £15m switch last January, and helped his boyhood club to seal promotion to the Premier League via the playoffs.
But since linking up with David Moyes at United, he's struggled for first-team action.
He's made just two substitute appearances in the Premier League for United this season. He harboured hopes of making the World Cup squad and must have felt he stood an outside chance at the start of the season after making his England debut in November 2012.
But a lack of action at United has severely dented any international ambitions.
