Botham and Warne make the cut..

Greatest all-time Test XI

Published 5 Comments

Ever wondered what could be the best test team ever? There have been several Cricketing magazines that have made their all-time best XIs - the ICC itself even made one.

Sadly, they can’t play together and probably never will. Still, making our 'dream' team won’t do any harm. There have been several players in the history of the gentlemen’s game who have had a massive influence on cricket.

It was a tough choice actually to drop any of those greats but in the end, I came up with the best XI. Let us take a look then at our 'Best XI':

W. G. Grace
Sir Don Bradman (C)
Sachin Tendulkar
Ricky Ponting
Sir Vivian Richards
Sir Gary Sobers
Adam Gilchrist
Sir Ian Botham
Dennis Lillee
Shane Warne
Glenn McGrath

Invincibles? Can’t deny that fact. There isn’t a single player in this team that couldn’t turn a match on it's head. Everyone in this team was a match winner. May it be Grace, whose heavy scoring still remains a source of shock or, may it be Bradman who is the greatest batsman ever.

Richards, on the other hand, could rip apart any attack in the world whereas Ricky Ponting’s counter attack and Tendulkar’s drives turned out to be nightmares for captains. Botham swas the one who could change the game with both bat and ball, the best example of which was 'Botham’s Ashes'.

Sobers too had a similar capability which made people label him as greatest all rounder ever. Next comes Gilchrist whose stroke changed the way people saw a wicketkeeper and there was hardly any ball that went past this man’s hands.

McGrath, Warne and Lillee - ever wondered what even one of them could do? Ask the batsmen who ever had the misfortune of facing them. These were those legendary bowlers that kept coming harder and harder and harder at you until you gave up.

While McGrath and Warne dominated batsmen in the 21st Century, there wasn’t a comparison for Lillee when he was busy getting wickets in bulk. And to add to this bowling line-up, you also have Botham and Sobers to face.

Thee task of beating this team would be impossible, but sadly it will also never be possible for them to play together. Two of them have already left us and the rest are in the age where they can’t even think of playing.

In a nutshell, this team is redoubtable, this team confounding, this team is gleaming and each player in this team was very incisive about his intentions, the intention was to win.
