The importance of certain squad numbers seems to vary dramatically from sport to sport. While in sports such as football - well, in this country, anyway - they seem to have historically followed a set pattern, while in American sports it is much more about choosing numbers personal to the competitor.

Despite this, though, there are still certain numbers in football that are deemed by many to be a little bit special and tend to be given to a specific style of player.

The number 10, for example, will traditionally be given to a creative-playmaker type - whilst the number nine is often reserved for the prolific goalscorer.

The number seven is another famous case. Usually worn by the right-winger in times gone by, it has become more versatile in recent seasons and is now worn by strikers, wingers and playmakers alike.

With that in mind, GMS has decided to look at/list a selection of the world's best players who currently wear the number seven shirt for their clubs.*

Click on to view some of the world's best no.7s. Which of these do you think are most worthy of the iconic shirt? Which aren't?

Who are the greatest players ever to have worn the no.7?

Is there anyone obvious that we've missed - don't hesitate to let us know and leave your own suggestions below!

*Please note, there isn't any particular order here and we obviously couldn't include every player - it's just intended to be a showcase of some of the best!

Just a heads-up, we've picked six current players and one past legend, just to mix things up....
