Manchester City boss takes swipe at Chelsea over Mata deal

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini has backed Arsene Wenger's claims that Manchester United should not be able to sign Juan Mata in the January transfer window.

Wenger is unhappy that Manchester United are signing a player of Mata's calibre in the January transfer window.

The Arsenal boss believes Jose Mourinho has allowed Mata to join the Premier League champions so he can help Manchester United take points off of their title rivals.

And Manchester City's Pellegrini has had his say on the debate by supporting Wenger.

Pellegrini said on Mata's proposed move to Old Trafford:

"I think Juan Mata is a very good player. It is a shame he didn’t play often this year at Chelsea. I think United buy a very good player.

"Personally I don’t agree that the player can go from one team to another team in the same league at this part of the year but rules are rules and he can change clubs.

"I think if a player plays for a club for more than half of the season, a club with money can take the best players from the other teams. The rules allow, so nothing to say.

“But I am not talking about the reasons of Arsene Wenger. I repeat what I just said, I think a player that played more than half a season with one club cannot change in the same year."

However Pellegrini has rubbished Wenger's claims that Mourinho is selling Mata so he can help Manchester United take points off of Chelsea's Premier League title rivals.

Pellegrini added: "I think if a player plays for a club for more than half of the season, a club with money can take the best players from the other teams. The rules allow, so nothing to say.

“But I am not talking about the reasons of Arsene Wenger. I repeat what I just said, I think a player that played more than half a season with one club cannot change in the same year."

If Mata's proposed £37million move to Manchester United does go through, the Spaniard could face Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on February 12 and Manchester City at Old Trafford in March.
