Top 5: Transfers that didn't make sense (1)

Ok, so the above photo from the official Manchester United Facebook page pretty much makes it impossible to deny that Chelsea are going to sell Juan Mata to the Old Trafford club.

It is a terrific coup for David Moyes, who has been struggling to steady the ship in the choppy seas of post the Sir Alex Ferguson retirement era and this will certainly go some way to helping alleviate the ills that have seen them fall to seventh in the Premier League.

However, the prevailing reaction to the move, including many at GMS, is one of "erm...what?". Ok, Jose Mourinho doesn't see the Spain international as compatible with the system he wants to deploy at Chelsea and Manchester United are unlikely to trouble them ion the title race this season.

But, Chelsea are directly strengthening a rival, for next year if not this, and Mourinho keeps talking about hanging around for the long-term, so it is a bit baffling.

Mata was Chelsea's player of the year for the two previous years and pretty much unifies opinion in that he is a really good player, so there were probably a few teams in Europe that would have been interested in signing him.

Anyway, it's happened now, so we might as well get used to it - it's not the first time it has happened either.

GMS had a little think and came up with five other occasions when a feeling of bafflement was induced upon hearing about a most unusual transfer.
