Manchester United are being linked with a shock swoop for Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, according to the Metro.

The 27-year-old, rated at £4million, is the son of Red Devils legend Peter Schmeichel and has been earning himself a generous helping of plaudits for his performances this year which have helped keep the Foxes at the summit of the Championship.

In recent days Serie A giants AC Milan have registered their interest in securing Schmeichel’s signature, with their motivation thought to be centred around finding a long-term replacement for current No.1 Christian Abbiati who turns 37 later on this year.

And now it would appear that Milan will be challenged by United, as David Moyes looks for someone to provide cover and competition to David de Gea. The Scot is said to be impressed with Schmeichel’s handling and sees him as an ideal candidate given the fact that his contract at the Walker’s Stadium is up at the culmination of the current season.

It’s thought that United will try to use current second ‘keeper Anders Lindegaard as part of the deal to entice Schmeichel to Old Trafford, but may loan the Danish stopper back to Leicester until the end of the campaign as they did with Wilfried Zaha last term.
