Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker has told David Moyes that the club-record capture Juan Mata may not be enough to secure Champions League football on its own, proclaiming to talkSPORT that the Red Devils should sign another player with defensive nous before the transfer window closes.
United completed a £37.1m deal to sign Juan Mata last weekend, luring the Spanish playmaker from Chelsea with the promise of consistent first-team opportunities in his preferred position.
Parker has insisted that United should not rest on their laurels after completing the Mata move though, urging Moyes to go out and sign either another defender or midfielder comfortable with a deeper role to make sure their push for a top-four finish ends with success this season.
The ex-Red Devils full-back told talkSPORT: "I would love to see David Moyes go out and buy at least one more player before the window closes.
"I don’t know whether Juan Mata’s arrival will be enough to guarantee a Champions League spot, especially when you look at Man United’s present form and performance level.
“They need creativity but, with that, you also need people in the team who can defend. There are other positions that need to be filled. Defensively [they need to improve] and signing a stronger player in midfield [would help that].”
Moyes' men currently sit six points behind Liverpool in the final Champions League qualifying spot, following a run of two defeats in their last three Premier League matches.
United will hope Mata can have an instant impact in their chase for a top-four place, with the midfielder in line for an Old Trafford debut against Cardiff City later this evening.
