Newcastle United have tabled a sizeable offer for 23-year-old French international Clement Grenier, according to ITV Sport.
Grenier, who has scored 12 goals in 89 appearances for Lyon, would be viewed as a direct replacement for the departing Cabaye and take up his mantle as playmaker at St. James Park.
Fan favourite Cabaye is set to be unveiled at Paris Saint-Germain today after the North East club accepted a bid thought to be in the region of £19million from the Ligue 1 leaders.
Cabaye’s shoes will be big ones to fill but attacking midfielder Grenier is highly-rated in France and has been heavily linked to Arsenal in recent transfer windows.
Lyon manager Remi Garde however is hopeful that his club can ward off interest from Newcastle as they did when Napoli came in for midfielder Maxime Gonalons.
Garde said: "The Clement case, I have not discussed with my president. You tell me the interest of Newcastle"
"For Clement, I think it will be the same as with Max [Gonalons]."
"I do not know if he received an offer or not and I'm not at all thinking about it”
The bid comes off the back of a disappointing goalless draw for Newcastle against Norwich on Tuesday night in which top scorer Loic Remy was sent off late on.
Remy will now miss Saturdays Tyne-Wear derby against neighbours Sunderland.
