SC Heerenveen have announced that current coach Marco van Basten will not renew his expiring contract when the season comes to an end, according to Yahoo Sport.

The former Ajax and AC Milan striker has been in the club since 2012 but today a statement on the club's website read: “The head coach does not have the right feeling to continue his service at the club and the board regrets his decision.”

Heerenveen and Van Basten have held a number of discussions behind closed doors, especially on the policies of the club.

The 49 -year-old from Utrecht signed a contract with the Frisian club in 2012 and last season, helped them to finish in eighth position in the Dutch Eredivisie. Presently, the team sits in 5th place and harbours hopes of qualifying for the playoffs which could offer them the opportunity to play in Europe next season.

Agent Perry Overeem revealed that a number of top European clubs are monitoring the situation of Marco van Basten, but at this point in time he is only focusing on Heerenveen until the end of the current campaign.

“We have no hurry," said Overeem.
