Who are the hottest players in Serie A right now? GMS Academy member KAILON P gives his verdict...
5. Giuseppe Rossi – Fiorentina – Forward
Rossi had missed 18 months of football and only played one match from October 2011 to the end of last season. However this season he has made a remarkable comeback, scoring 15 times in 19 matches including a 14-minute hat-trick against Juventus in October.
On average he has either a goal or assist in every match he’s played, unfortunately he reinjured his knee against Livorno in early January. He was originally set to miss six weeks but it now looks like it may be much longer. A tough break for Serie A’s top scorer.
4. Romulo – Hellas Verona – Midfielder
Romulo is perhaps the biggest reason that promoted side Verona sit in eighth place and only one point off a Europa League spot. Romulo has anchored the Verona midfield with an interesting combination of skill and strength.
He is very comfortable on the ball with enough quality to play a final ball however he also excels defensively with excellent tackling and concentration. He has four goals and six assists this season as well as 2.9 tackles per game and 1.5 interceptions. He will be a large factor on where Verona finish at the end of the season.
3. Paul Pogba – Juventus – Midfielder
The 20-year-old has had a brilliant season building on a solid performance last season. He has been a key to Antonio Conte’s success in the league so far. He has a perfect balance of attack and defence, combining the ability to break up opposition attacks and launch his own from the defensive half.
He has becoming known for his cracking long range strikes and has hit six goals this season. It was rumored that PSG had been considering a €70 million offer for him, which was apparently rejected by Juventus. Although that may be a high evaluation, Pogba is a brilliant talent loaded with potential. Watch for him to improve even more in 2014.
2. Mehdi Benatia – AS Roma – Defender
Benatia has proved himself as a class defender for Roma this year and has helped Roma become the most defensively sound team in the league with only 11 goals conceded. He moved from Udinese in the summer and has picked up right where he left off last year.
He is adept at playing the ball from the back, boasting a pass success rate of 89 percent and he has chipped in with five goals. Roma will need him to continue his brilliant form if they hope to still be in the title race come May.
1. Arturo Vidal – Juventus - Midfielder
Simply put Vidal has been one of the best in the world this season. He has 10 goals and five assists in 21 matches as a central midfielder. That is truly remarkable. He has been Juventus’ best player and the main reason why Juve sit in first place.
He can play almost anywhere on the pitch and yields great stats across the board. He averages 4.5 tackles per game, two key passes and an 84 percent pass completion rate. Combine that with his 10 goals and you get the best player in Serie A.
Vidal said it best himself last week stating: “I’m the best player in the world in this position, no one defends and scores as many goals as I do.” Boastful? Maybe, but then again based on this season, he’s absolutely right!
