Chelsea captured Mohamed Salah from FC Basel as a cut-price replacement for the departing Juan Mata.

After facing competition from Liverpool, the Blues managed to strike a deal for the 21-year-old who completed a £11million dream move to the Bridge.

It's fair to say that the Egyptian is relatively unknown in the big leagues and only first caught the eye at the beginning of last year, during an impressive Europa League campaign.

Salah joined FC Basel at the beginning the 2012/13 season, after his career in Egypt with El Mokawloon was cut short, following the terrible Port Said Stadium disaster which saw the Egyptian Premier League postponed for the remainder of the year.

That summer, Basel offered the midfielder a four-year contract, at the same time when star player Xherdan Shaqiri had left for Bayern Munich.

Salah had only a short time to settle in, but with goals against Tottenham and Chelsea in the Europa League last year, heads turned and people were starting to take notice of the youngster.

But it's this season where Salah has stepped up his game.

He started the campaign by sending Basel into the Champions League group stages with a man of the match performance against Ludogorets Razgrad in the play-off rounds.

It was in Europe where the Egyptian became a serious target, scoring against Chelsea in both ties after two excellent displays, showing his confidence against the world's best sides.

He looked set to sign for Liverpool this month but after Chelsea showed interest Salah opted for Stamford Bridge and is now looking forward to make his debut for the team he embarrassed only months before.

Salah should play along the line of the iconic attacking three at Chelsea, joining the likes of Eden Hazard and Oscar.

There will be competition for places undoubtedly, but a step up in league for Salah will benefit his development, and let's not forget he is only 21.

With pace and skill, the £11million man will fit right into Chelsea's playing style, although one concern for Jose Mourinho will be Salah's work rate defensively, as Mourinho has stressed the importance of this quality.

Salah will hope to debut for Chelsea against Manchester City on February 3.
