Jose Mourinho congratulated his team with bubbly for an excellent season so far last Tuesday, but the champagne went flat after a 0-0 draw against West Ham last night.
Despite 39 efforts to take the three points, the Blues managed just nine shots on target. Hammers keeper Adrian made great saves from Frank Lampard, Samuel Eto'o and John Terry.
A defending West Ham that managed just one effort on goal, parked the bus at Stamford Bridge and picked one point that closed that gap to three points from the dropping line.
"It's very difficult to play a football match where only one team wants to play. It's very difficult," Mourinho said.
"A football match is about two teams playing and this match was only one team playing and another team not playing.
"This is not the best league in the world, this is football from the 19th Century."
Chelsea's last night performance has shown that Mourinho need to sign a world-class striker as soon as possible as the London club missed to go top against a bottom table team at home.
Juan Mata was finding the gaps to take advantage on his opponent defence and create chances to score, but he is not doing that anymore for Chelsea.
The move of Mata to Manchester United has weakened the Blues after the Spanish international assisted Robin van Persie's opener on his first game at Old Trafford that gave United all three points.
"Chelsea were lacking something despite having their big names out there - and perhaps they needed a Mata," Ray Houghton told Match Choice.
"Willian, Oscar and Hazard are very good at running at players and beating them with their ability and pace, but they didn't have someone who had that craft and creativity to pick out a pass."
The former Liverpool and Republic of Ireland added: "I didn't think there was an intensity about Chelsea, though, and I don't think they passed the ball with precision or quickly enough to unsettle West Ham defensively, but they should have put some of their attempts on goal away."
Mourinho has one day to bring his missing element to Stamford Bridge to avoid missing out on the Premier League title.
