Manchester City will not be signing Porto duo Eliaquim Mangala and Fernando this evening, according to Sky Sports.
It was reported that City had been holding talks throughout the day over a deal in the region of £35m for centre-back Mangala and for midfield teammate Fernando.
However, nothing came of it, while a plane which was booked to bring the pair over to Manchester was later cancelled by the Citizens.
City now are not expected to buy or sell any players before the transfer deadline passes this evening.
City boss Manuel Pellegrini had previously been cagey about the club's transfer targets when he spoke to the media.
"For the moment, there is no news," the Chilean boss told reporters. "Tomorrow (Saturday) everyone will know what has happened.
"Tomorrow you will know what happened. It's the same thing (for players leaving).
"There is a lot of business but no news."
Javi Garcia and Marcos Lopes could have been used as make-weights as part of the deal, but unless anything else is to develop, they are staying.
