Manchester United striker Federico Macheda has joined Birmingham City on loan on transfer deadline day.

The striker is one of three players to leave the Premier League champions for the Blues, with Tom Thorpe and Tyler Blackett also making the switch to St. Andrew’s.

Macheda shot to fame at Old Trafford back in 2009, scoring a famous late winner for Manchester United after Sir Alex Ferguson introduced the unknown teenager off the bench.

He’s been unable to secure a regular place in the Red Devils line-up since then however, with loan spells at Sampdoria, QPR, Stuttgart and Doncaster Rovers following over the next four years.

Despite the change of manager at Old Trafford, the 22-year-old remains low down the pecking order at Manchester United, and David Moyes has allowed the player to leave for a Sky Bet Championship club once again this season.

The Italian follows a number of other youngsters out on the door on the final day in January, with Wilfried Zaha and Tom Lawrence also hitting the exit door on short-term deals.
