Arsenal have been rebuffed in their efforts to bring Newcastle United striker Papiss Cisse to the club on loan on transfer deadline day.

The Daily Express claim Cardiff City also wanted to sign the Senegalese international on loan, but both clubs have failed to land the player after making enquiries.

The paper goes on to claim that the Toon were only interested in letting Cisse leave on a permanent deal, with a £10million on the player’s head.

With Arsene Wenger wanting to bring the player to the Emirates Stadium on a short-term deal as well, a move to the Gunners failed to gather pace.

Arsenal are relatively short of strikers this season, with Olivier Giroud leading the line and Nicklas Bendtner the only senior back-up available in north London.

The Premier League title chasers have strengthened in midfield though, with Swedish international Kim Kalstrom joining the Gunners on loan from Spartak Moscow.

That solves one problem, but it now looks increasingly unlikely that another forward will be added to the Arsenal squad.
