January is traditionally not as lively a transfer window as the summer, but this year has served up a few tasty topics for football fans to discuss and dissect. Here are the best deals of the New Year of the Premier League.
3. Mohammed Salah – Basel to Chelsea - £11 million
Fast, direct and a very tricky customer, Mohammed Salah could be the new wing wizard of Stamford Bridge.
At 21-years-old, Salah is already a huge player for Egypt, and has been the focal point of the Basel team since his 2012 signing from home country side El Mokawloon. Salah could be the replacement for tiki-taka master Juan Mata, but he is a very different player.
Mata’s game is based around defence cutting passes and smart one-two’s, whereas Salah is a very good dribbler, and will torment the full-back with devastating pace.
2. Thomas Ince – Blackpool to Crystal Palace
Well that’s what you call an eleventh hour deal, reportedly completed just minutes before the end of the January transfer window, and what a signing this could be for Palace.
Up there with the best of England’s young player’s, Thomas Ince has been a devastating sight for full-back’s all around the country at Championship level, and will continue to do so in the Premier League.
This along with the signing of Joe Ledley, could be the thing that well an truly saves Crystal Palace from relegation, and what a story that could be.
1. Kurt Zouma – St Etienne to Chelsea - £12 million
Along with Raphael Varane of Real Madrid, Kurt Zouma is one of the best centre-backs in the world, and they’ve got him for buttons compared to others.
Positionally perfect, strong and fast, Zouma is the complete centre back. Not only this, but he is also a great replacement for John Terry, as he is a true leader on the park. Jose Mourinho though has decided to send him back on loan in France though, this deal suits both parties, and could be the perfect remedy for an ageing Chelsea defence.
