Barcelona are lining up a move for Manchester City midfielder David Silva as veteran captain Xavi draws closer to retirement, according to The Mirror.
A list of potential candidates to replace the Barca legend has been drawn up, and is reportedly topped by David Silva, who is rated at £50million by his club.
Rumours have arisen that Xavi has received ludicrous offers from the USA and China, with retirement also being an option on the cards for the midfielder, who not only passed his 700-game landmark for his club but also won a place in the Fifpro World XI Team of the Year.
According to Barca officials, Silva is the ideal man to fill the void that will be left when the iconic passing master leaves the Nou Camp.
City boss Pellegrini is keen to keep hold of Silva, who is a vital man in the club's midfield, although the lure of returning to his homeland to play with the likes of Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta may prove too good to turn down for the ex-Valencia man.
Barcelona have other problems with ageing players, with defender Puyol nearing the end of his career at 36. But it appears a replacement for Xavi is their priority, and as good a player as Silva is, will he be truly able to replace Xavi?
