Russian giants Zenit St. Petersburg are preparing a huge offer to prise Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen away from Arsenal before the end of their transfer window, according to the Metro.
The Belgian centre-back has fallen down the pecking order at the Emirates, despite his status as one of the squad’s senior players, and is struggling for game-time behind the likes of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny.
Zenit are in the market for a central defender and, despite having been linked with Manchester United target Ezequiel Garay in January, it’s thought that they are planning a sensational raid to take Vermaelen away from the Premier League.
With the Russian transfer window not closing until the end of this month a switch is very feasible, particularly given the 28-year-old's longing to play regular football in a World Cup year.
According to reports Arsenal could be offered up to £18million as Zenit look to test Arsene Wenger’s resolve, though the Frenchman has yet to clarify his stance on Vermaelen’s future.
