The following is a list of the five best defenders in the world at the moment...
5) Vincent Kompany
The Belgian has been one of the best defenders in the Premier league and indeed in the world since Manchester City’s title winning season and has been a fundamental player for his national team. Kompany is strong, fast and has the occasional eye for goal.
4) Gerald Pique
Not the most graceful or liked player in the world, Pique doesn’t always have the greatest of touches but he does play for arguably the best team in the world - FC Barcelona - and he has been a great player for them this season and has picked up a few goals in the process.
3) Sergio Ramos
The best Spanish defender and one of their greatest ever players. Ramos is slowly becoming a Real Madrid legend and is on course to become a Spanish legend also. Though at times inconsistent and reckless - proven by the fact he has over 10 red cards in his professional career - he does at times show how good he is and how talented as a defender he is.
2) Mats Hummels
The German International is a very important player for Borussia Dortmund. Hummels has the potential to be the best defender in the world and many say he will be the best if he leaves Signal Igduna Park and showcases his talents at another big club.
1) Thiago Silva
By far the best defender in the world is the Brazilian captain, who has been a rock in defence for Paris Saint-Germain and also the Brazilian national team. Many eyes will be on him during the World Cup.
