Napoli midfielder Gokhan Inler is was the subject of interest from a British club during the January transfer window, according to the player's agent, following reports the Swiss had been targeted by Liverpool.

Inler has made over a century of appearances for Napoli since joining the club from Udinese in the summer transfer window of 2011, and helped the club clinch the Coppa Italia during his first season with the club.

The 29-year-old continues to be a regular under new manager Rafael Benitez, yet he has drawn some criticism from the more fanatical sections of the Napoli support amid suggestions he wants to move elsewhere.

Liverpool has been touted as a potential destination, with Brendan Rodgers having been linked with a move for the player last month, although it would appear unlikely Benitez would sanction a move to Anfield.

Napoli have already knocked back interest from potential suitors, according to agent Dino Lamberti, who understands why some supporters may be frustrated by the performances of his client.

"Gokhan does what the coach asks, without any problems," he told Radio Kiss Kiss. "Fans are a bit critical, I understand them, a lot of money was paid and [they] expect more and more.

"[He] never said he wanted to leave Naples. [He] loves to play and live in Naples. Inler wants to remain in blue"

Lamberti added: "There have been inquiries from other teams: British, German and Turkish."
