Premier League clubs spent a whopping £125million on transfers during the recent January window, more than Ligue 1, Serie 'A', Bundesliga and La Liga put together, according to the Soccerex Transfer Review by Prime Time Sport, reports the Daily Mail.
The expenditure of England's top-flight clubs dwarfed that of their European counterparts, with the biggest spending Premier League side almost matching the total outlay of nearest rivals France, who splashed out £44million on new players, with almost half of that figure exhausted by just one club.
Italian clubs signed by far the most players, with 49 on permanent deals and a further 46 on loan, for a combined total of £34.9million, while the Premier League completed deals for a total of 51 players - 21 of which were on short-term contracts.
Unsurprisingly, English clubs are the best represented in the list of biggest spenders in Europe in the mid-season window, with four featuring in the top 10. Italy have two entrants, while Turkey, France, Germany and Russia each have one.
