Give it another five years and there’s no reason why Vincent Kompany’s name won’t be at the top of lists like these.

Former Manchester City manager Mark Hughes brought the Belgium international to the Etihad Stadium in 2008 for the bargain price of £6m. That must surely go down as one of the Premier League’s greatest value-for-money deals.

Kompany played an integral role in City’s triumphant 2011/12 Premier League campaign - and is currently one of the best defenders, not to mention most inspirational captains, in world football.
