Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker has admitted that his side were hopeful of completing the signing of 'cheeky boy' Luis Suarez last summer.
The Uruguayan had been linked with a move to the Gunners in the summer, and Arsene Wenger's side had a bid rejected last year. And German international Mertesacker admits that the Gunners' failure to land the Liverpool striker is a big disappointment.
Mertesacker has praised the Uruguayans ability to change a game in a heart-beat and was confident that Suarez would have been a hit in London.
"Suarez is like a cheeky boy. He looks like a cheeky boy who can really switch on and off how he wants to be, so that is really something. When he is on the pitch, what is going on around him doesn't bother him," the German told the Guardian.
"When we heard that Arsenal might be interested in him, obviously we (the squad) were up for it and we thought he would fit in. He is a pure striker that is what comes out after the transfer requests," he added.
Arsenal had once again been linked with a fresh bid for Suarez in January, but the controversial striker has once again shown his commitment to Brendan Rodgers' side.
And Suarez has showed the Gunners exactly what they have missed out on, as he has since gone on to score 22 goals in 23 games for Liverpool already this season.
