California defensive end, Ted Agu has died today aged 21, the team have reported.Agu, who played mainly as a backup last season, collapsed during a team conditioning run this morning according to a number of sources.

The junior who hailed from Bakersfield, California recorded six tackles in seven games for the Golden Bears last year.

A statement released by the team said: 

"At this time, we are deeply saddened to inform you that Ted Agu, one of our student-athletes and a member of our football team, passed away tragically this morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ted's family and friends, our players and coaches, and our University family."

The Golden Bears had a 1-11 record last season in their first year under head coach Sonny Dykes.

Agu recorded 20 sacks in the last two years of his high school career at Frontier High School. He also participated in basketball and track. He was named the most academic player on his basketball team and was on the honor roll.

The death of the junior was met by an outpouring of sentiment on social media from those who knew him. His name and #Calfamily were trending on twitter in the United States.
