Floyd Mayweather set to fight Amir Khan after results of online poll

Floyd Mayweather may this week announce Amir Khan as his next opponent after the Brit won an online poll to decide who will fight him on May 3.

Last week the unbeaten superstar told fans that he would let them decide who he faces next, with both Khan and the hard-hitting Argentine Marcos Maidana in the running.

And it would appear that the people have spoken in favour of Khan, who narrowly beat Maidana by way of decision back in 2010.

The 27-year-old, who won the silver medal in the 2004 Athens Olympics, garnered sixty per cent of the 35,000 votes cast, and could earn a career high £5million if he manages to broker a deal with the reigning world champion.

There are those who believe that Mayweather v Khan could be a potential mis-match, with the latter’s jaw having proven to be less than sturdy in recent fights. However it's likely it will prove to be a sell-out show, with Khan possibly the most commercially viable fighter left for Mayweather to fight.

Mayweather’s recent endeavours in the ring saw him overcome the previously unbeaten Mexican prospect Saul Alvarez, in a fight which was billed as being one of his most dangerous to date.

His opponent, on the other hand, was beaten by both Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia before improving his record against Carlos Molina and Julio Diaz.
