Manchester United and Arsenal appear to face serious competition from the continent for the signing of Fabian Schar.
According to reports from Spanish newspaper El Mundo Deportivo cited by the Daily Mirror, Barcelona are keen on the highly-rated FC Basel defender and are considering making a move for his services during the summer.
22-year-old Schar - who is valued at approximately £5 million - joined the Swiss champions in July 2012 and has excelled during his near two-year stint at St. Jakob-Park.
He has particularly impressed for Basel on the European stage, with Murat Yakin's men just denied a place in the last 16 of the Champions league after finishing two points behind Bundesliga outfit Schalke in Group E.
Such form has seen the Switzerland international attract attention from the Premier League, with both Manchester United and Arsenal having both reportedly tracked Schar.
Manchester United, who endured yet another miserable weekend as Darren Bent popped up with a last-minute equaliser to secure a 2-2 draw for Fulham at Old Trafford, are having a torrid first season under David Moyes and it seems almost inevitable that they will be seeking to dramatically strengthen their squad during the summer.
With most areas of the squad appearing in need for attention, the centre of defence will surely be a priority given the amount of goals Manchester United have conceded during the 2013/14 campaign to date and with captain Nemanja Vidic set to leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season.
If they are serious about any potential move for Schar, however, it appears that they may have to battle La Liga leaders Barcelona in the process.
