Jeff Samardzija has signed a new one-year deal with the Chicago Cubs, reports ESPN.
The pitcher has signed a new deal which will see him earn $5.345 million in 2014, despite having asked for $6.2m for arbitration.
However, after the Cubs initially offered the star a deal worth $4.4 million, a compromise has now been struck between the team and Samardzija.
At 29-years-old, Samardzija still has a lot to offer, but the Cubs have been unable to tie him down for a long term deal for the second successive year.
The deal will come as good news for Samardzija as he can now focus on the upcoming season with the team.
He will now be looking to improve on last season after he was 8-13 with a 4.34 ERA for the team. It remains to be seen as to what the long term future holds for the pitcher but, for now, he will be targeting success with the Cubs.
