Michael Sam has been given support from many different athletes past and present today after he announced last night that he was gay.

The SEC defensive player of the year's decision to come out before the NFL combine was forced because chatter had started to surround him.

He had already told his team-mates from Missouri last season, but none of them disclosed the information over the course of a whole season, and Magic Johnson spoke praise of Sam today on Twitter.

In several posts he said, "I support Michael Sam for the courage it took to tell the world that he is gay. I can't wait to see Michael Sam play on Sundays in the NFL!

"Watching Michael Sam's interview, he showed the world that he is a smart, intelligent man, a fierce competitor and winner."

Meanwhile, Johnson also commented on the interview Ryan Clark gave to ESPN, in which he questioned what NFL players would be allowed to say to Sam in a joking fashion.

"I really enjoyed Ryan Clark's interview on @ESPN_FirstTake about Michael Sam and the NFL locker room," he added.
