Manchester City will switch their attention to PSG midfielder Blaise Matuidi as January target Fernando has reportedly signed a new contract at Porto.
City had wanted Fernando, and teammate Eliaquim Mangala, in the last window but were priced out of a move and will instead turn to the France international to bolster their midfield options, according to talkSPORT.
The club have been linked to a number of midfielders in recent times and their need for one was heightened when Martin Demichelis was deployed in a holding-midfield role in the 1-0 defeat at home to Chelsea.
Matuidi has been at the Ligue 1 champions since 2011 but the club have recently strengthened their midfield with the capture of Yohan Cabaye from Newcastle, and with the Frenchman's contract running out in the summer, it is unclear whether he will sign a new deal.
The 26-year-old has made 19 appearances for France and has also attracted interest from Chelsea and Manchester United but City hope they can lure him to them. If they can he will provide stern competition for Yaya Toure and Fernandinho.
