Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney is the odds-on favourite to replace Nemanja Vidic as the Premier League champions' captain.

Red Devils manager David Moyes will be weighing up his options between now and the end of the season in hope that he can pick the right man to lead the side back to their glory days.

Vidic's fellow experienced defenders Patrice Evra and Rio Ferdinand are both expected to leave the club at the end of the season, so they are out of the running to replace the Serbian centre-back.

The next batch of potential candidates includes Wayne Rooney, Darren Fletcher and Robin van Persie - however the trio all have their flaws.

Rooney has reportedly asked to leave Old Trafford on two previous occasions so fans may question the club's decision to hand the England international the armband.

Fletcher on the other hand does not play week-in, week-out because he is still recovering from his long-term spell away from the team and is likely to be replaced by a world-class central midfielder in the summer.

And the last senior candidate Van Persie has not been in the dressing room long enough to command the armband over the likes of Rooney and Fletcher.

The only other player in the squad who has the credentials to become a Manchester United captain is Phil Jones, however he is still largely inexperienced.

SkyBet odds: Who will replace Vidic as captain of Manchester United at the end of the season:

Wayne Rooney - 8/15

Darren Fletcher - 5/1

Robin van Persie - 13/2

Michael Carrick - 8/1

Phil Jones 12/1

Jonny Evans - 18/1

David de Gea - 40/1

Juan Mata - 40/1

Patrice Evra - 50/1
