Arsenal have been in contract talks with right back Bacary Sagna for a long time but the negotiations are said to have gone awry, according to prominent fan site Arseblog.
Last month, Arsene Wenger hinted that though the club was still trying to get the player to put pen on paper, his commitment to the club shouldn’t be questioned if he was to leave this summer.
“We try to secure Sagna because he is a very important player. He is fully committed and will be as long as he stays here,” Wenger added.
As suspected in January, negotiations have come to a halt due to disagreements on salary and length of the contract. Since then, negotiations have been on-going but player and club have failed to come to a settlement.
Sagna’s importance as a right back for Arsenal should not be questioned. But, he is going to turn 31 in a matter of days and Arsenal do have the budding Carl Jenkinson as cover.
For Sagna, the financial incentives to move to a team such as Paris Saint Germain must be immense at his age. If Arsenal aren't willing to meet his salary needs, it might just benefit the club and player in the long run.
We might just have to wait until this summer to see how this transfer saga turns out.
