It is Valentine's day and love is in the air.
How ever, we won't be talking about love affairs between men and women. We are talking about the cupid arrow that hit a couple of rising and already established stars, making them proclaim their love for Arsenal football club.
During the summer and winter transfer windows, more than one top footballer proclaimed their love for the north London club and revealed a desire to play for the Gunners. This was a scenario Arsene Wenger should have cashed in on.
Granted, it wouldn't be the best idea to jump for any star that confesses his Arsenal dream but if his fits the bill for what the squad needs then surely Wenger should look to make the move happen?
Christian Benteke was the first to proclaim his love for the Londoners in August when he apparently stalled on signing a new contract with Aston Villa. He was probably waiting for his childhood dream club to make a move so that he could make the jump across to north London without much risk of being ostracised by the Villa fans.
Another player to profess his love is Porto's striker Jackson Martinez. In January, he claimed "I’m an Arsenal fan and would love to sign for the Gunners". Bearing in mind that the Gunner's needed alternatives to Olivier Giroud up front, these two players would have benefited them in a great deal this season by being a dangerous attacking pair.
Arsenal also received such praise from transfer target miss Julian Draxler. He wanted to join the Gunners and they stalled.
Had Arsenal capitalised on such players crossing fingers that Wenger was going to move for them there's no doubt they would be taken as serious title contenders this season. One can only image the potential of a player who arrived at the club and was willing to pledge his long-term future to the Emirates. That is something the Gunners need. A loyal player who would do all he can to see the club go higher.
Benteke, Martinez and Draxler could easily become the clubs new Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp and Patrick Vieira all having the love of Arsenal as their driving force.
